Transrectal ultrasound

A transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is a procedure in which a device is placed into the rectum to help a doctor locate abnormal tissue around the prostate gland or to collect a sample of tissue to examine (biopsy).

An ultrasound uses sound waves that bounce off solid structures. This type of ultrasound creates a picture of the prostate gland.
